Celebrating in Olympic Style with Core Assets Fostering Eastern

Archived: Posted August 6, 2012

Eastern Region held three Achievement Award days during the first week of the school holidays.  With the opening ceremony of the Olympics also taking place that week it seemed appropriate to adopt an Olympic theme, especially as one young person was chosen to form part of the Guard of Honour for the Vietnamese Team.

All three events included outdoor Funfair activities including a barbecue, a bouncy castle, coconut shy, a shoot the ducks game and a penalty shoot-out. While the temperatures soared up to 30 degrees, children, carers, staff and panel members enjoyed the celebrations in the sunshine. Children were awarded certificates and trophies to acknowledge their efforts and achievements throughout the year. Carers and staff were awarded hampers to mark their long service and a few teachers and Local Authority social workers were given trophies and chocolates in recognition of all their commitment and hard work.

Lize Markham (Fostering Service Manager) for the south of the region dressed as a supporter of Team GB and presented the Awards along with Greg De Smidt (Area Manager) at both the Ipswich and Southend venues. Karen Cann (Regional Manager) presented the awards at the Peterborough venue whilst Rachel Strongitharm (Recruitment) attended all three events as official photographer, taking lots of wonderful pictures.

Sylvia Jackson (Education Officer) not only organised all three regional events, but also compered. She spoke about how all the athletes at the Olympics have achieved so much just by taking part and that similar was true of all the young people at these awards. Many of the youngsters were acknowledged for sporting activities, including cricket, swimming and athletics.
