FCA Yorks and Lincs Staff and Carer Forum at Aston Hall

Staff and foster parents from across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire gathered at Aston Hall for a successful Staff and Carer Forum, featuring insightful presentations on supporting children in care, including a powerful contribution from care-experienced Social Work Student Nakita.

Staff and foster parents from across Yorks and Lincs recently came together for a successful and engaging Staff and Carer Forum, held in the beautiful surroundings of Aston Hall.

The day began with a warm welcome as attendees enjoyed a cuppa and a selection of morning pastries, providing a great opportunity for colleagues and carers from across the region to connect, catch up, and share experiences before the forum commenced.

The event was opened by our Deputy to the Registered Manager Jo Charity who welcomed everyone to the forum and introduced several new members of staff. Attendees were also updated on the latest developments across the region, celebrating achievements and sharing important information about ongoing initiatives and plans.

One of the highlights of the day was an insightful presentation delivered by Jane Batley on the topic of shame and how it can present in the children and young people we support. Jane’s thought-provoking session encouraged attendees to reflect on how feelings of shame can influence behaviour, relationships, and emotional wellbeing, while also providing practical strategies to help children feel understood, valued, and supported.

The forum was further enriched by a powerful contribution from our Peterborough team. Nakita, a care-experienced Social Work Student, spoke eloquently about her journey and experiences, offering valuable reflections that resonated strongly with attendees.

Nakita shared her personal journey and reflections with the group. Her honest and inspiring account offered a unique perspective on the care experience and highlighted the lasting impact that positive, supportive relationships can have on young people. Nakita ’s presentation was both moving and thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.

Throughout the day, staff and foster parents were encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and contribute to discussions, reinforcing the collaborative approach that is at the heart of our service. The forum provided a valuable opportunity to learn from one another, celebrate successes, and strengthen the relationships that help us achieve the best outcomes for children and young people.

One foster parent made the following comment, “An incredibly insightful and eye-opening presentation. It was a deeply moving session that provided both professional insights and personal food for thought. The interview with Nakita was a powerful reminder of the failures and successes of a child in the care system.  Her journey at 25 stands as a testament to her personal resilience but her reflection serves as an urgent call to action for the social care sector to cultivate empathy and treat every child as inherently worthy of success. The forum delivered what traditional training often misses. The raw unfiltered truth of lived experience. There is no substitute for hearing  directly from people who have lived through the system”

A huge thank you goes to everyone who attended and contributed to making the day such a success. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our next regional forum.
