Make time this Foster Care Fortnight

Archived: Posted May 16, 2016

Every 20 minutes across the UK a child comes into care in need of a foster family.

With 9,070 more foster parents urgently needed across the UK, we’re appealing for new foster carers as we prepare to mark Foster Care Fortnight from Monday 16 May to Sunday 29 May – the UK’s biggest annual foster carer recruitment campaign.

Foster Care Fortnight aims to highlight the fantastic work of foster carers in this country, as well as encourage people interested in fostering to take that first step into becoming a foster carer.

What are you waiting for? Foster with FCAThis year’s Foster Care Fortnight theme is ‘Time to Foster, Time to Care‘, and highlights the fact that every 20 minutes across the UK, a child comes in to care in need of a foster family. This equates to more than 1,000 children and young people during the duration of Foster Care Fortnight.

Mark Costello, CEO of Foster Care Associates (FCA), said: “Many people would love to foster a child, but they believe that their personal circumstances, or skills and experience, would prevent them from doing so. It doesn’t matter whether you’re single, over 50, childless, or in a same sex relationship, fostering could be for you, and we want to bust some of the myths that may prevent potential foster carers from making that first enquiry with us.

“Foster Care Fortnight is the ideal opportunity to talk to your local FCA team and have an informal face-to-face chat to find out more about fostering. People are often surprised by how much support and training is available and this is a big reason for many people coming forward and becoming a foster carer with FCA. If you have a spare room in your home you could potentially foster!”

If you would like to know more about how to become a foster parent, we will be holding drop-in events across the UK throughout Foster Care Fortnight. They’re an informal chance to get more information about becoming a foster carer. You can chat to people who are already fostering, as well as some of the FCA support team, who will be able to answer any of your questions. Find your nearest fostering information event.
