Holywell student captures nature with national photography accolade

Tomos Jones, a 13-year old boy from Holywell, has been named the winner of a national photography competition launched by FCA.

Tomos was one of 121 children who entered photographs into the inaugural competition. Under the theme ‘nature’, Tomos’ entry wowed voters, with his winning picture unveiled at a national exhibition held at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens on 4th April.

Launched in January 2018, the competition was open to all FCA children and young people, including birth, step, adopted and looked after children. The agency’s carers, staff, children and young people were invited to vote for their favourite photograph in what was a hotly contested competition, with the winner scooping a brand new camera and top of the range accessories.

Tomos commented: “I’m delighted to have won the FCA national photography competition. I’ve always loved taking pictures and this achievement suggests other people love my pictures too! I can’t wait to start using my new camera, and will most definitely be entering again next year. Thanks FCA and everyone who voted for me.”

Nathan Jones, Tomos’ dad and an FCA foster carer added: “Tomos really enjoyed participating in the competition, and for him to win is an even greater bonus. Initiatives such as this are vital as they allow birth children and foster children to come together over shared passions and interests, and we’re all thrilled to have been a part of it.”

The national photography competition is one of many initiatives FCA runs throughout the year all aimed at bringing together foster families.
Roy Murray, Managing Director at FCA concluded: “Our role is to ensure our looked after children and their foster families receive the best care and support possible. Part of that is to provide stimulating activities and events that inspire and unite all our children.

“It never ceases to amaze me how talented our children and young people are and we unlocked some amazing potential. All the entries were of a very high standard, it was almost impossible to choose a winner, but as you can see, Tomos really captured the essence of this year’s theme – nature. Well done to him and to all the children and young people who took part.”

Inspired by a young person in FCA North West who has a particular passion for photography, the FCA national photography competition was open to children from three to 18 years old. Divided into age categories three to eight, nine to 13, and 14-18 years, those with the most votes in each category received a ‘highly commended’ award. The entrants with the most votes were invited to the national exhibition before the overall winner was announced.
