Core Assets Fostering - Hall of Mirrors

Here’s the thing. I never thought I’d be a foster carer. Not in the very beginning anyway.

It had always been close to my heart and I’d thought about it on and off for years. Full of good intentions, that’s me.

But you know how it is – life gets in the way. We build walls for ourselves; create barriers between us and our dreams.

So when it came to fostering, I let things – big things, little things – get in the way.

Remember the hall of mirrors? The one at the fairground that hilariously distorted your reflection? As a child, I loved the way it stretched, twisted and squashed my body. Spaghetti-long legs, teeth the size of my head – it showed all sorts of different versions of who I was, everything but the real me.

It was the same kind of trick with fostering. I had a mirage of excuses, some plausible and others, well, a little less so. My daughter was still young. She needed me. I would wait until we had moved house, until the dog was no longer a puppy, until I could afford to reduce my hours at work. I used to let little things, like the state of my garden, get in the way. Well, I’d never get approved with that fence falling down would I? And look at the state of those hydrangeas. Scandalous!

The years passed and my passion for fostering was muffled by trivial excuses. But underneath it all, there was something else holding me back. And that something was a four-letter word buried, but alive and strong, in the corner of my mind. Fear.

I was scared of what lay ahead. Terrified I wouldn’t be good enough. Afraid I’d become too attached to the children in my care, that I wouldn’t want to let them go. It held me back, this fear, and I let it.

Foster Care Fortnight changed all that. I found that there were other people just like me who’d faced their fears and gone on to help some of the country’s most vulnerable children. Their hard work amazed me. Their spirit was encouraging and their stories truly inspirational.

So two years ago, I finally took a deep breath and picked up the phone. As it rang, I caught my reflection in my kitchen window. There I was, sitting at the table, taking the first step on one of the most meaningful, challenging and rewarding journeys of my life. Forget the hall of mirrors. This was the real me.
