Simone and Adrian’s Story

Archived: Posted September 7, 2017

‘’The joy you get from knowing you’ve helped a young person become everything you know they can be is really something!’’

Meet Simone (43) and Adrian (47) Trundell from Hatfield. The couple are relatively new to fostering having been foster carers with Foster Care Associates (FCA) for just over a year now. Following a successful start with FCA, Simone and Adrian are keen to provide a safe home and care for more children and young people.

Describing their journey so far Simone said: ‘’Before fostering with FCA Adrian and I both worked full time. I was an operations director for 11 years, and was totally dedicated to my role, however for a long time I had an interest in fostering and it was always in the back of my mind.

‘’When I decided to leave my full time role, I sat back and thought about actually fulfilling my dream to start a new fostering career, as I wanted to add value to my life and do something more meaningful. Adrian and I discussed our idea to foster with my mum as she lives with us. She always knew I had the desire to look after children and young people but had natural concerns. None of us really knew what to expect or how fostering may impact our family.

‘’I googled fostering and several private agencies and the local authority came up initially, in the search. We contacted three or four providers and opted for FCA based on what we read and the people we spoke to.  The support network described for the children, as well as the carers, was extremely comforting and what helped make up our minds in the end.’’

During their first year as foster carers the couple have looked after a 14 year old teenager on a long term placement and have also provided respite care and support for other foster carers.

Talking about some of the challenges the couple initially experienced Simone said: ‘’When our foster son first arrived he had challenges settling down. Due to prior circumstances with his previous placement he felt quite nervous about trusting us. Our main aim since then has been to build up trust with him, to make him feel as safe and cared for as possible.  Although he seems settled and really happy with us now this will be an on-going battle not something that changes over night.

‘’The training FCA provide is second to none and has equipped us with the skills to gain our placements trust. I’ve attended as many training sessions as I’ve been able to since joining FCA and have found that even sessions that may not be specific to our teen placement are still invaluable. There are always bits I can relate to and learn from. ’

Simone also shared the couple’s favourite fostering moment and reflected on their first year with FCA. She said: ‘’My brother got married last year and of course we took our long term placement with us to his wedding. When the photographer rounded everyone up for family photos our teen seemed surprised when I called him over to join in.  He asked me if this meant he was now part of the family and I was so touched by this moment. I said that he has always been 100% part of our family. This meant the world to him and really triggered something positive for our relationship.

‘’Fostering will always keep you on your toes as things can change so quickly, but the joy you get from knowing you’ve helped a young person become everything you know they can be is really something!

‘’Compared to everything I had ever accomplished in my previous career, nothing has been as rewarding as this past year fostering with FCA. Although there may be more challenging moments, the good times far outweigh the challenges. If you have the time and patience to work with these children and young people just do it!’’
