Michelle and Adam’s Story

Archived: Posted May 10, 2016

“We love them all like they are our own flesh and blood.”

For the appropriately named foster carers Michelle and Adam Foster, each day can certainly never be described as boring, as they share their home in Coventry with 10 children and young people.

What started out as a three bedroom property has, over the last 8 years, been extended into a nine bedroom home, providing a secure and nurturing place of safety not only for their own four birth children but also for their four adopted siblings and two foster children who they foster through Foster Care Associates (FCA).

Michelle and Adam FosterIt wasn’t always like this for Michelle and Adam though, who previously had high flying careers working full time as a PA and Production Manager respectively, but it was the day when Michelle saw an advertisement about becoming a foster carer which changed their lives forever.

Michelle said: “Following the birth of two of my own children I suffered with terrible post-natal depression and the professionals who helped me to overcome this crippling illness were absolutely amazing. I saw first-hand what a difference these people make turning around the lives of others. I thought to myself ‘I could do that’, and wanted to give something back.

“Adam and I talked through becoming foster carers with our own birth children, at the time the youngest was seven and the eldest was 17, and they were in full agreement.  After a long and thorough assessment process one of our first placements was a young boy called J.

“Over the following five years we also fostered J’s three siblings who we welcomed straight from birth. Adam and I felt strongly that the children should stay together, and there was a danger, that through circumstances beyond our own control, they might be split up. So to cut a very long story short we decided to adopt them. It wasn’t an easy process, and we have had to jump through many hoops and attend many meetings and interviews, but now they have the security of knowing that they have each other and us on a long term basis.

“Completing our family, for the moment (!), are our two recent foster placements, R aged 12 and C aged only 6 months who also happens to be another sibling to our four adopted children.”

Over the past eight years Michelle and Adam have fostered 17 children and young people all with very different physical and emotional needs; however, the training and support provided by Foster Care Associates (FCA) has helped them to gain the necessary skills and techniques to positively manage those with complex needs.

The couple’s own birth children also provide valuable support and assist in the day-to-day household duties ensuring that they run a ‘tight ship’. Michelle said: “Having worked for many years as a PA to a managing director I was always highly organised and it never leaves you! With a home of this size we have to have a system, boundaries and routine which everyone respects. From loading the washing machine to doing the washing up, everyone does their bit!”

And Michelle’s advice to those considering becoming a foster carer? “Without hesitation I’d do it all over again. If you’ve ever thought about fostering then please make that first enquiry – do it, you won’t regret it. I find it difficult to put into words how emotionally connected I am with all my children – you learn to love every single one who comes into your home as strongly as if they were your own flesh and blood. The difference you could make will make a lasting and positive difference to their own life and yours.”
