Local couple celebrate retirement after 16 years of fostering

Foster Care Associates Cymru North (FCA) has praised Linda and David Beard from Prestatyn in North Wales for their dedication and service to fostering. The couple who have been foster carers for 16 years have looked after more than 60 children and young people, and this year have decided to retire and take some time out for themselves.

They started fostering in 1992, pursuing Linda’s dream of looking after children and young people as she experienced first-hand what it’s like to be a vulnerable young person in care when she was a child.

Reflecting on their time as foster carers Linda said:

‘’ I spent a year in a children’s home when my mother was very ill. My brother and sister were fostered but in those days I was deemed too old to be fostered and we were separated.  When I left the care system I wished I could take all the children with me and vowed that one day I would do something to help disadvantaged children and so I did with David’s support.

‘’In 2008 we became foster carers with FCA and it was the best decision we ever made. The process was really efficient, we made panel within four months, and once we became carers the support we received from FCA was fantastic. We only had to pick up the phone and ask for support and support would be on its way. ‘’

Anne Armstrong, regional manager at Foster Care Associates said: ‘‘I still remember the first time I met Linda and David. I knew then that they would be brilliant foster carers – and so they were. Over the 16 years they have made such a positive difference to the lives of so many children and young people. I can’t thank them enough for their service and their commitment both to FCA and those in their care. I wish them a long happy retirement.’’

Linda continues: ‘’If I had to offer any advice to people thinking about fostering I’d say to do it. It’s the most rewarding feeling.  We are sad our fostering journey is coming to an end but we will always be ambassadors for FCA, and the fostering community.

David and Linda plan to retire in North Wales where they are both really looking forward to spending their days in their caravan and taking some time to themselves.
