After raising three children of her own, Lisa decided to use her parenting skills to change the lives of vulnerable children and young people. Her infectious enthusiasm, selflessness and caring nature has enabled her to provide a safe and nurturing home to many children since joining FCA.

Lisa and her family have dealt with a range of challenges over the past three years and now care for Louise, a nine year-old foster child. They also specialise in parent and child placements.

“Getting up to speed and having the skills to manage parent and child placements brings with it a different set of challenges but it has opened up a new aspect of fostering for our family”, says Lisa.

“Parent and baby placements are all about ensuring the safety of baby while offering mum or dad the support and life skills they need to be a good parent. Establishing a daily routine and instilling confidence is vital. We then teach cooking skills, how to feed and change baby as well as making time for play. It is a case of taking small steps every day to bring about long term positive change.”

With the help of her local support team, Lisa has undergone specialist training to help her deal with some of the more complex issues surrounding the role. She explains: “When we started fostering it was quite a daunting task but with the training and support offered by FCA South we were soon fast tracked to cope with a range of complex fostering issues. Fostering is now a way of life for our family and each child we look after quickly becomes part of the family.”

The family enjoy getting involved with life story work too. “FCA South has been really helpful in encouraging life story work”, she says, “so that every child in placement has a collection of memorabilia giving them a record of the time they spent living with our family. We have memory books and boxes for everyone full of happy memories. Family outings are always fun and there is never a moment when I’m not collecting items or taking photographs to remind us of these special times.”
