Linda’s career as a foster carer began over 30 years ago when she and her husband started caring for Daniel, a 10 month old baby boy who had been severely mistreated. Linda says:

“It soon became obvious that there was something very wrong with him. He was failing to reach his milestones and was eventually diagnosed with autism.

We had no knowledge of caring for a disabled child but with support from our social worker we began to face the challenges that lay ahead. It wasn’t easy but we were determined to succeed. We had many sleepless nights and had to battle to secure a placement for Daniel at a special school.

Was it all worth it? You bet it was and we have never looked back.

Since Daniel, we have cared for many other children with special needs – far too many to count.

Working with Foster Care Associates has been wonderful as they have given us support and training in developing new strategies to cope with complex behaviour.

Even after 30 years of fostering, I still encounter new challenges every day and training is vital to staying on track. My husband died recently, so I am now a single carer but still offer respite care to children from all walks of life. Daniel has grown into a tall, handsome 30 year old man with a great personality. He lives nearby in his own home and it is amazing how much he has achieved. I am immensely proud of him.

I’m often asked why I do the job I do and my reply is always ‘where else would I get such job satisfaction?’

For me, seeing vulnerable young people grow into mature, happy and settled adults is the biggest reward of all. I have gained so much from fostering.”
