Karen and Dan’s Story

updated at 9:17 am, October 6, 2017

Karen and Dan Boresjo discuss their first ever fostering placement, from the impact on their lives and the joy they felt as they welcomed a foster carer into their home.

We really enjoyed our panel day. I won’t say we weren’t nervous as we certainly were, but despite our nerves, it was an enjoyable experience with interesting questions and challenges put to us. It was a really special moment when the Chair told us the panel were unanimously recommending our approval and I remember floating out of the room on an incredible high and wiping away a tear or two. Sometime in the next week, we received a phone call from the office to let us know we were now fully approved as foster carers and that we could expect certain forms to arrive etc. What we didn’t expect was that later the same day, we would get another call asking if we would consider taking a 3 month old baby on a respite placement that weekend! Talk about moving fast!

We had no hesitation in accepting the respite offer and we can’t imagine a more perfect placement to start us off on our journey as foster carers. Pick up and collection were arranged directly with the baby’s current carer and other admin was arranged through the office. We were provided with detailed handover notes and I knew I could contact his current carer at any time. We felt really confident in taking this as our first placement as we felt we had been given every last detail even how he liked to be swaddled if he couldn’t fall asleep etc.

We thoroughly enjoyed his brief stay in our house. Our children loved helping out and having a little person to fuss over and we enjoyed learning how to manage all the different aspects of care, admin, contact etc. It was a great introduction to the world of fostering.

After handing the baby back, we were able to reflect and look at how our children had adjusted to having to share our attention and we could see how it had affected them. To be honest it was almost all positive reflection. We did find a couple of areas where we felt we needed a bit more training and we also felt we wanted to learn a bit more about the admin and procedural side of things. We have been able to go over all these with our SSW since.

We were amazed how quickly this little baby became part of our family and also how emotional it can be to let a placement go, even after a short stay. We are now feeling really ready and looking forward to having a placement of our own very soon.
