And as you progress on your fostering journey, you’ll have even more opportunities to further your skills through our advanced training.
Therapeutic foster care training
Living with the young person you care for means you get to know them really well and can help them begin to trust in adults again. However, to do this, we know you need specialist training and support. That’s why we run a number of training courses that teach therapeutic knowledge and skills.
Our one and two-day therapeutic courses include:
- Understanding attachment and attachment difficulties
- Understanding and responding to complex trauma
- Brain development in infancy
- Understanding and managing self-harm
- Responding to sexually harmful behaviour
- Introduction to reflective and therapeutic practice
We also offer weekly group training sessions including ADAPT, which stands for Attachment Difficulties and Parenting Therapeutically. These sessions are run by a therapist and offer carers the opportunity to support one another and learn from one another’s experiences.
Alongside training courses, you can also study for formal fostering qualifications if you would like to.
Many of our foster carers have already achieved or are working towards the Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s Workforce. This is the recognised professional qualification in fostering and is a great way to develop your knowledge and skills.
But we also realise that growing our people is not just about courses and programmes, which is why we work with you to help you develop in a way that works best for you.
