Can I Work Whilst Fostering?
Something we hear a lot from prospective foster parents is; can you foster and work? This all does depend on your individual circumstances. For example, if you do want to foster alongside working, you might want to take into consideration factors such as:
- How flexible your employer is?
- How many hours you currently work?
- Whether you foster as a single carer or with a partner, and if you can come up with a plan that suits everyone
Fostering with a full-time job is possible when you’re fostering as a couple, where one can work full-time while the other can work part-time or have flexible hours. If you’re fostering as a single person, you’d generally only be able to have part-time work or a job with flexible hours.
Ultimately, there are times fostering and working can work in tandem, but only if the child’s wellbeing and safety aren’t compromised.

Allison
“We really wanted to foster because we wanted our own children to have the experience of being foster brothers and sisters. We thought it would be a nice experience for a child who was in care to come into our family, warts and all and be part of the family life for however long they are with us."
Clinton
“Foster care is not without its challenges, but there are so many little moments that make it amazing. There is a need for young people to be looked after and supported, so a fostering myth that should be busted wide open is that any one can do it."
Ellie and Pete
"Moving into full time fostering was definitely unknown territory for us, but it was the best decision we made and we’ve never looked back. Jumping into a new career field just like this has been brilliant. A first-class team we are proud to serve and be part of."
