Today marks Care Day, the world’s biggest celebration of children and young people with care experience.

Growing up in foster care can present unique challenges and obstacles for children and young people. Unfortunately, for many, they have to deal with negative stereotypes around their future and what they are capable of achieving.

However, it's time to challenge these misconceptions and break down the stigma associated with growing up in care. Every individual deserves to be seen, heard, and valued for who they are, regardless of their upbringing.

That’s why this Care Day, we are speaking to Care Leaver Jess, who shares how foster care changed her life, and how she’s using her own experience to help looked-after children and young people at FCA in her role as a Participation Officer at Thames Valley.

Jess was in care from the age of seven, up until the age of eighteen. She credits her long-term foster mum, Michelle, for being a positive influence in her life, and teaching her the necessary life skills she needed to navigate her way to independence.

“Being in care has made me a better parent, my foster mum set such a good example, she showed me a really good work ethic and if I didn’t live with her, I wouldn’t have been on the path I’m on now”

My Things Matter

Jess has been a strong advocate for the My Things Matter initiative – a national campaign that aims at improving the experience of children and young people when moving from one home to another during their time in care.

The region have kindly been donated 120 duffle bags from Madlug, so when a child comes into care with FCA Thames Valley, they will receive one of these bags.

“This is something that is theirs and that they can keep forever. It is so important that young people feel respected, valued and dignified when moving home and these bags will ensure they do.”
