Here at FCA, we know that once you’re an approved foster carer, you’ll want to have your first placement as soon as possible.
During the assessment process, we’ll really get to know you and your family and will develop a strong profile about your strengths and the type of children who will be a good match for you. This will help the local authority to select you as the preferred carer for a child or young person.
In some cases, once you are matched to a child, we’ll be able to introduce you to them in advance, giving you the opportunity to have a chat and get to know them. You’ll also get to prepare a welcome booklet for the child with pictures of you, your family and your home. This will help bring you and your family to life for the child before their placement begins.
Before the placement begins you’ll be made fully aware of the child’s history and why they are in the care system. We’ll provide you with all the support you need to do your best with the child and will always be there for support and guidance as and when you need it.
We also like to put our new foster carers in touch with more experienced foster carers for further support and advice; they work as great mentors and provide invaluable help to guide you through the early stages of your fostering journey.
You’ll be provided with telephone numbers of your support team who’ll be there to help you 24 hours a day and you can pop into your local office at any time, whether you have a question or would just like a cup of tea and a chat!
We are the foster carer’s carer and will be here every step of the way to support and guide you through the exciting journey of becoming a foster carer.
