What’s the Story?

parent readingBooks are powerful things. They can make us think, laugh and cry. The stories inside take us on adventures to wonderful places and help us discover new thoughts and ideas. Best of all, they enrich the lives of people of all ages and from all walks of life.

That’s why this week is so special. It’s Children’s Book Week – a celebration of reading that brings together thousands of young readers across the UK to share their love of the written word.

Children’s Book Week is living proof that, even in our technology-obsessed world, we’re still fascinated by the telling and sharing of stories. Why? Because reading captivates, inspires and empowers us. It’s good for our health and wellbeing. It makes us happier, more creative and more connected with our community.

For looked after children, reading can have an even bigger impact. It can help them make sense of the world around them and understand their own situation. And reading together is a brilliant way of supporting attachments between looked after children and their foster carers.

What’s more, there are some brilliant organisations in the UK dedicated to helping looked after children engage with reading. Booktrust is one of them. It runs a number of schemes, including The Letterbox Club and Children’s Reading Fund, that offer free books and reading support to looked after children to help improve their reading ability and encourage a lifelong passion for literature.

It’s helped 10 year-old Rhys to discover a new love of reading and improve his confidence and self-esteem. “We’ve seen a big change in Rhys”, says his foster carer. “The book packs made him feel really special. He went from way behind his reading age to beyond it which was an incredible achievement. Now he loves telling people about his books and sharing them with others.”*

Like Children’s Book Week itself, Rhys’s story shows us that there’s more to books than just ink on a page. They have the potential to inspire, motivate and enhance our lives.

Ultimately, they give looked after children and young people the power to change their own stories and create a brighter, more promising future.
