What You Can Learn About Fostering In Half An Hour

Core Assets FosteringThe other day I was sitting in a café waiting to meet a friend for coffee. As she’s always late I go prepared to wait and take a book. But two women were sitting at the next table and I was drawn in to listening to their conversation about fostering. And though I felt like a bit of an intruder (ear-wigging whilst pretending to read), I couldn’t help but want to hear more.

I worked out that one of the women must’ve been a foster carer and her friend didn’t know much about it because she didn’t know foster carers got paid for fostering (it is a career after all). She’d never heard of an independent fostering agency either, apparently she’d assumed (quite wrongly it turns out) that you could only foster with your local authority.

The carer told how, after taking the first step and plucking up the courage to enquire, she began a process that would eventually lead to her being approved to foster and interestingly, it wasn’t as scary as she’d expected it to be.

She started to tell her friend a story, saying that around three years ago she’d had a little girl placed with her. Though she was five years old, the child was so tiny she was more like the size of a toddler. When she arrived she didn’t walk or speak much at all, she wouldn’t make any eye contact with her carer and she seemed to be very lethargic and disinterested in everything around her.

“We took it very slowly, I mean like tiny steps and for months we made no progress, got no response at all really. But then gradually we started to see a change in her.”

I heard her say that the same little girl is still with her and making fantastic progress.

I could hear the pride in her voice when she said “she eats now, she smiles, she talks and she’ll even join in with conversations. We’re so proud of her.”

It was really lovely to hear the carer tell her friend “I love what I do, I only wish I’d done it sooner.” I could tell she really meant it.

So I was almost disappointed when my friend finally arrived to meet me because it was one of the most interesting half hours I think I’ve had in a very long time.
