VOYPIC and Foster Care Associates cook up a storm to help young people in care

This Christmas Foster Care Associates (FCA) Northern Ireland and the Voice of Young People in Care, (VOYPIC) a charity that aims to improve the lives of children in care, are joining forces in the kitchen.

FCA carers, foster children, care experienced young people and youth workers at VOYPIC, which has an offices in Belfast, Ballymena, Lurgan and the North West are participating in a six week cooking course which involves equipping the participants with the all the necessary skills to plan, prepare, host and cook for a Christmas Care Party which will be held in December, for over 50 foster carers, children and their families.

The course is being facilitated by Marlene Hughes, a foster carer from Ballymena who has been fostering with FCA Northern Ireland for eight years, and Niamh Harron from VOPYIC.

In addition to the cooking skills the young people will develop, they will also be educated about food hygiene, budget food shopping and having a balanced diet. They will be encouraged to work both independently as well as in teams, with the aim of building new friendships and their confidence in and out of the kitchen.

Commenting on the partnership Niamh Harron, participation development worker at VOYPIC said: “VOYPIC is delighted to be partnering up with FCA on this project. Although this isn’t our first collaboration having previously hosted coffee mornings and working on much smaller events together, we are so excited to be working on such a fun programme for children and young people in care.”

“We are constantly trying to change attitudes towards children in care and care leavers. Many have had a tough start to life and deserve the same life chances as their peers who have not been in care. We look forward to building on our existing friendship with FCA working towards our common goal – to provide safe and happy experiences for children in care.”

Marlene Hughes, FCA foster carer and course facilitator, added: ‘’Being able to partner up with support groups such as VOYPIC is a wonderful opportunity for the young people as well as for us foster carers. This event is one of many that FCA have created in order to encourage friendship, collaboration and support.

“Together with VOYPIC we have been fundraising for weeks and are so excited now that we can finally get cooking. Seeing the joy on the young people’s faces when they receive their certificates at the end of the course having put on an entire Christmas meal for their friends and family will be absolutely priceless.”
