There you sew… kind hearted foster carers’ gift to underprivileged girls

A group of our foster carers from across Conwy and North Wales are not only making a difference to the lives of young people in their region, but also helping young girls in third world countries through an innovative sewing project.

Foster carer sewing bee in North WalesThe ‘sewing bees’ – who are all foster carers with our Cymru North region – meet on a regular basis at our regional office in Abergele to make dresses for underprivileged girls across the third world as part of a charity initiative called ‘Dress a Girl Around the World.’

The dresses are made from cotton fabric using a simple pattern often referred to as a pillowcase dress due to their simple shape, are sent to the charity who then distribute to those most in need.

As well as an opportunity to help young girls across the world, the sewing sessions also allow the foster carers to meet on a regular basis to talk about their fostering experiences and support each other.

The ‘sewing bee’ sessions were the idea of Jo Clinton who lives in Colwyn Bay and has been a carer with FCA Cymru North for nearly 15 years. “It’s great knowing that we’re helping to making a positive impact on the lives of young girls in the third world who have probably never had the experience of owning something new.  These dresses give them hope and knowledge that someone cares,” said Joanna.

“We always require 100% cotton fabric and would like to appeal for donations of unwanted fabric so we can continue with to help girls in dire poverty in third world countries,” she continued.

Sandra Jones, registered manager for FCA Cymru North said: “This is just one example of the amazing community work many of our carers do in addition to providing safe, stable and loving homes to children and young people in the region.”

If you would like to make a donation of new or clean unwanted fabric to help the foster carers with their charitable efforts please email Jo.
