Talented Youngster Scoops Top Prize

Archived: Posted July 3, 2013

Core Assets Fostering - South WesternA talented youngster was awarded first prize in a national artwork competition, hosted by leading fostering agency, Core Assets.

Ellis, 10, displayed his creative skills when he submitted a 2D portrait of his mum Christine, who fosters with Core Assets in the South West. The youngster scooped top prize and received a mini iPad.

The national competition attracted hundreds of entries from across the country. Looked after children and birth children were invited to submit pieces of artwork under the theme ‘portraits of foster carers’, which coincided with Foster Care Fortnight™ 2013.

“I just could not believe it when my mum told me I’d won first prize,” said Ellis.

“I was over the moon.  I really love doing art at school and taking part in the Core Assets competition as it was a really cool project.  I used bits of dried fruit, glitter, pasta and plastic gems to create an image of my mum and, because she’s so special and such a wonderful foster carer I placed a gold medal around her neck.

“Thanks Core Assets for arranging the competition, it gave me and the foster child we look after an opportunity to be creative together and have fun.”

Ellis and his mum Christine have been fostering since February this year. They are fully supported at Core Assets by the South Western team who provide 24 hour support as well as on-going training.

Registered manager for the region, Johan Strydom commented: “We were overwhelmed by the standard of entries our competition attracted from looked after children and birth children.

“It’s hugely rewarding to see the youngsters engage in the activities we organise. Ellis was chosen as the overall winner because he had used so many different materials and the picture was bright and colourful.  It really stood out for the judges.”

As part of a Core Assets recruitment drive in the area, the agency is holding an information event at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre, Fiddlers Wood Lane, Bradley Stoke BS32 9BS on Tuesday 10 July between 4pm and 7pm.

Anyone is welcome to drop in to meet friendly staff and gather information on becoming a foster carer.
