Taking Step-Down Fostering to the Next Level

Archived: Posted September 9, 2014

Taking Fostering to the Next LevelWe’re pleased to announce that we’ve won a new step-down fostering contract with Birmingham City Council.

This unique partnership will see us working in the heart of the local community to help young people move from residential settings into foster care, giving them a chance to experience the stability of family life.

Our step-down fostering programme involves a 52-week package of intensive support. After 12 months, the child or young person can remain in placement if it’s right for them. For foster carers, this means more planned and regular referrals, increased support and greater long-term placement stability.

We take a team approach to supporting our carers, their families and the child or young person in their care. Our specialist foster carers work with a dedicated team that includes a supervising social worker, therapist, support worker and education officer. We regularly review the progress of the child or young person in placement to help our carers recognise what is working well.

This support is complemented by a specialist training package, which provides our foster carers with an insight into the behaviours of children and young people, and helps them to develop communication skills and strategies on how to improve their outcomes.

As part of our careful matching process, we may be placing young people from Birmingham with foster carers outside of the area, if this is the right move for them. This means that specialist carers from across the country will have the opportunity to offer these children the support they need to thrive.

Helping a young person make a successful transition to foster care takes patience, dedication and resilience. You’ll need a positive attitude and bags of energy. In return, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you’re making a real difference to the lives of vulnerable young people.
