South Wales Young Carers Receive Recognition

Young carers from South Wales have received recognition for the difference they make to the lives of the children and young people their families foster.

35 foster families from across South Wales attended the annual achievement awards ceremony held at The Liberty Stadium.

Foster carers paid tribute to the positive difference their birth children make to youngsters in care by nominating them for awards that recognised their hard work and personal achievements.

Jamie, 12, received the Young Carer of the Year award at the event and was nominated by his mum Rachel and dad Mark. The family has been fostering with Core Assets Fostering for three years.
Rachel commented: “I nominated Jamie because he has whole heartedly accepted the work we do and gives up his free time to support us in caring for the little ones.

“I’m so proud of Jamie. I think his experience of fostering has made him a very independent, mature and selfless young man.”

Victor Thomas, regional manager for Core Assets Fostering Cymru, presented the awards, and commented on the resilience and compassion of young carers:

“Birth children are the unsung heroes of fostering and are often integral to maintaining stability within the foster family. They act as a role model and friend to the vulnerable youngsters their family looks after and ensure children feel welcome in the family home.

“Congratulations to all of the young people that received awards, everyone at Core Assets Fostering Cymru is really proud and incredibly grateful to birth children for their hard work.”
