Saddling Up for the School Holidays

Archived: Posted June 25, 2015

LisanewA group of young people and staff from FCA Cymru South took to horseback during the half term break for a day of riding through the Welsh Mountains.

Over a dozen people attended the Brecon-based event, which was organised by our children and young people’s forum.

The day out was a brilliant opportunity for the young people, aged between 7 and 18 years old, to get to know one another and create fantastic new memories. For some, it was the first time they’d ever ridden a horse or experienced a group event with other young people. But being paired with a horse that matched their riding ability made it easy for them to overcome their nerves and learn the basics.

After two hours in the saddle and a picnic lunch, the group returned to Tregoyd Mountain Riding Centre full of smiles, with many young people asking their carers to buy them a horse. But our staff weren’t smiling half as much – they were more concerned with how their legs would hold up for the journey home!Naominew

StevenewLisa Capper, Principal Support Worker, says, “It was lovely to see the start of some new friendships and great to see that young people are benefitting from meeting people like themselves who have something in common and share their experience of being in care.”

Our forums are just one of the many ways we support the children in our care. Taking place four times a year, they give looked after children and young people the chance to meet others in a similar situation and take part in fun events in their local community.
