Preston foster carers retire after a decade of dedication

Core Assets Fostering - NWLocal foster carers Jackie 60, and Steve 54, have been recognised for their 10 years long service to fostering and the difference they have made to over 100 children they’ve cared for.

The couple, from Preston, were presented with their award at a celebratory event in February hosted by Core Assets Fostering. The award marked both their decade long dedication to fostering as well as retirement from the rewarding role.

“We have thoroughly enjoyed the last 10 years as respite foster carers, but felt the time was right for us to take a step back,” explained Jackie.

“We’ve looked after so many children, every one of them special. Even when they leave care they stay in our minds, and it’s lovely when they come back to visit, to tell you about their new job, or to introduce you to their own family.

A rewarding career

“Fostering is extremely rewarding, you meet children from all walks of life and it’s really satisfying watching them grow and seeing them achieve. It can be challenging though, so you need to have a lot of patience, be understanding and be able to offer a sense of belonging and security to a child or young person.”

Jackie added: “The support from our social worker and the rest of the Core Assets team has been fantastic. The training shows you what to expect and is really helpful.

“Fostering is hugely rewarding, the last 10 years have flown by and we’ve loved every minute.”

There is currently a shortfall of 9,000* foster carers across the UK and more must be recruitment to meet the growing numbers of children in care and replace the 13% of the workforce who leave or retire every year.
