Archived: Posted January 27, 2015

Considering becoming a foster carer? There’s never been a better time to take the first step.

We’re hosting a number of fact-finding evenings in Northern Ireland for people who are interested in becoming a foster carer and would like to know more about the process and what’s involved.

Our next events will take place at:

  • Newry, Canal Court Hotel – Wednesday 11th February, 7pm – 8.30pm
  • Derry, City Hotel – Thursday 12th February, 7pm – 8.30pm

Our Northern Ireland team will be on hand with a wealth of information about fostering and the extensive support that we offer to our carers.

There will also be opportunities to talk first-hand with current foster carers and social workers to find out what life is like fostering children and young people.

Feargal O’Keefe, regional manager for FCA Northern Ireland, said: “There is an urgent need for more foster carers in Newry and Derry. We are actively looking for responsible, nurturing adults who have a spare room and can give young people in need of a foster home the support they need to thrive and grow.

“There are many factors that make up an ideal candidate – everything from being adaptable, resilient and nurturing to being a good listener and flexible in response to a young person’s needs. We often find that parents whose own children have flown the nest are able to provide the support and environment needed to make a real difference to someone’s life.”

Staff from our two regional offices in Derry and Belfast will be available to answer questions and guide potential foster carers through how to get involved and help dozens of children and particularly teenagers in Northern Ireland who are in need of a foster family.

Feargal continues: “Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience. We have some amazing people caring for children and young people in Northern Ireland and our regional office ensures that those local to the area benefit from the support we have to offer whenever they need it.”
