North West tackles big issues on International Foster Carer Appreciation Day

Foster carers and staff from our North West region gathered at the Park Hotel in Chorley to mark International Foster Carer Appreciation Day on 14th October, with an innovative and thought provoking presentation on child sexual exploitation.

Here in the North West we are determined to tackle the big issues that affect vulnerable children and young people, and this special day gave us the perfect opportunity to deliver a valuable learning experience to both staff and carers.

We invited Loudmouth – a theatre group specialising in social issues – to perform their much acclaimed production of ‘Working for Marcus’, a piece of theatre which creatively but sensitively, tackles the issue of grooming and child sexual exploitation.

This was a powerful and emotive drama which left everyone in no doubt as to the ease of how child sexual exploitation can come about and the devastating effects it has upon its victims. The room fell silent as the message hit home.

The production was very well received by all. An ‘in character’ Q & A session at the end of the performance had a considerable impact on the audience.

More knowledgeable than when they arrived, and certainly more aware of the scale of the issue and where to access help, carers starting giving fantastic feedback as they departed, having collected a gift of appreciation for their wonderful work.
