North West Couple Celebrate a Decade of Fostering

Archived: Posted February 24, 2014

Emma Price 3Foster carers Emma and Martin are celebrating after receiving a long-service award in honour of their dedication to fostering.

Over the past ten years, the Chorley-based couple have cared for a wide range of children with various needs. Emma said it had been an ‘eye-opening’ yet ‘hugely rewarding’ experience that has a lasting and positive impact on the whole family.

“What we have done is open ourselves and our family up to a world that we would not have seen otherwise” says Emma. “We now have a better appreciation of it and so do my children. My son was just three and my daughter five when we started this journey so they have grown up with it.

“I firmly believe that they would not have become the lovely young people they are without the appreciation and understanding they have developed through fostering.”

After meeting through church and youth work, fostering seemed a natural career choice for the couple. “Fostering made sense for everything that we believe ethically about helping other people,” Emma explains. “It is extremely rewarding and we are different people for having had these young people in our lives.”

Although it can be a fantastic experience, Emma is clear that people interested in the role have to be prepared. “I’ve been helping with training new foster carers”, she says, “and I think it is important to be realistic with them. It is rewarding being a foster carer but your life is changed by it.

“After all, it’s a career not a hobby and it ca be hard. It is all encompassing but FCA is incredibly supportive.”
