New Derry office to boost fostering in Northern Ireland

Archived: Posted March 10, 2015

We’re excited about the official opening of our new office in Derry on Friday 13th March, which will help us support more foster carers and looked after children in the north west of Northern Ireland.

The new office on Pennyburn Industrial Estate will be officially opened by Derry foster carers Liam and Marianne Gallagher, who have been fostering with us for 10 years. Our Northern Ireland team and Derry Mayor Brenda Stevenson will be honouring the couple in recognition of their dedication to fostering.

The official opening will be a drop-in event, from 12-2pm, and anyone interested in fostering can come along. It’s a chance to find out first-hand from FCA Northern Ireland carers and social workers how to get involved and help dozens of children and young people in Derry who are in need of a foster family.

The Derry office opening follows hot on the heels of the launch of Foster Care Associates Northern Ireland’s Manifesto for Excellence in Foster Care at Stormont on 9th February. The manifesto sets out 10 pledges to improve the life chances and champion the rights of looked after children in Northern Ireland, whilst promoting best practice in fostering.

The team also hope to grow the numbers of foster carers in the region, to help meet the shortfall of 200 carers currently needed in Northern Ireland.

Feargal O’Keefe, regional manager for Foster Care Associates Northern Ireland, said: “Fostering is an incredibly rewarding experience. We have some amazing people caring for children and young people in Derry and North West Northern Ireland and this new regional office will ensure that those local to the area benefit from the support we have to offer whenever they need it.”

“There is also an urgent need for more foster carers in Derry. We are actively looking for responsible, nurturing adults who have a spare room and can give children and young people in need of a foster home the support they need to thrive and grow,” added Feargal O’Keefe.
