Mother’s Day call to foster new parents

Archived: Posted March 10, 2015

With Mother’s Day coming up this Sunday, we’re appealing for more foster carers who are specially trained to help young mums build-up their parenting skills.

Parent reading to childWe are looking for people with the time, inclination and space to care temporarily for a young parent and child in their home, offering support and guidance to the new family in a stable and caring environment.

Parent and child foster placements are a specialist type of fostering which gives a parent – often the mother – and child the best opportunity to remain together.

A young parent may be struggling to care for their child and require the extra support that a trained foster carer can give them.

Here at FCA, we really encourage parent and child placements because they allow the parent to maintain and build upon their relationship with the child, meaning a foster home can play a pivotal role in ensuring the parent and child a happy lifetime together.

David Oldham, Foster Care Associates’ CEO said: “Rather than referring struggling young parents to residential units to have their parenting assessed, family courts and local authorities are increasingly beginning to refer them to parent and child foster placements.

“With fully trained support staff in the around the country ready to work with new carers and guide them, Foster Care Associates offer full support and guidance to carers and children alike to ensure that each relationship fulfils the children and the family as whole”

Placements can range from short-term assessment periods, which generally last up to 12 weeks, to more long-term ones that offer the chance to help the parent provide care and guidance to the child. Some are pre-birth placements that help new parents prepare for the birth of the child.

We give support to the foster family every step of the way, including specialist training for parent and child foster care, a financial allowance, access to carer support groups and organised family activities.
