Millie’s Blog

Archived: Posted February 27, 2013

This Friday, we thought we’d hand over our blog to someone who knows first-hand what it’s like living in a family that fosters – Meet Millie.

My name’s Millie and I live in a fostering family.

I have recently begun a degree course in Health & Social Care (Bsc Hons) at Cardiff University and in the future I hope to go on to study for my Master’s degree in Social Work. My choice of degree was influenced greatly by the fact that my parents have fostered since I was eight years old.

I believe that most of the young people have benefited greatly from their experience of living in our home, where they have had stability and support. I have always tried to be a positive role model for them and offered my support and friendship.

Over 40 children, young people and adults have come to stay in our home and I have been actively involved with caring for the younger ones, making friends with the teenagers and being supportive.

My parents have specialised in the care of parent and child placements for the last four years and I have been able to benefit from the experience of assisting in the caring of very young babies and helping support their mums, some of whom have had serious issues.

It has generally been a positive experience for me, which has helped me develop into a more caring, understanding person with the ability to empathise with others. There have been upsets along the way with difficult situations but I am confident that this has made me stronger and more able to cope with adversities. Being part of a family who foster with FCA makes me feel good about myself because I feel that I have made a positive contribution.
