Meg is a Fostering Marvel

fca-logoA foster carer from the North West is celebrating her ‘incredibly rewarding’ fostering journey after being recognised for her commitment to the role.

Meg, from Barrow, was presented with a long service award to celebrate 20 years of caring for vulnerable children with FCA. The presentation took place at a special awards ceremony, where tributes were paid to her dedication.

Meg has always enjoyed caring for children and says her journey started over 40 years ago. “I come from a big family”, she explains, “and have looked after children since I was 11. When I got divorced it was something that I thought about pursuing and I checked with my own children if they would be ok with it and then went for it and haven’t looked back since. My three youngest grandchildren have grown up with fostering and they don’t know any different. They treat all my looked after children as part of the family and always have.”

Since joining FCA Meg said the support she has received has been a major reason in her continuing to foster. “I can’t fault the support I’ve had from FCA over the years”, she says. “There’s always someone at the end of the phone. The help from everybody, even from the other carers, has been first class and I couldn’t do it without that backing.”

Although fostering can sometimes be difficult, Meg believes that if people have the right qualities, it can be a hugely rewarding career choice. “There have been lots of challenges, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it”, she says. “In fact, I’m still in contact with quite a few of my previous placements.

“I think everyone brings a different outlook to fostering. You need a certain amount of strength and stickability – if you tend to give up easily you can’t do a job like this. But if you have those qualities and you enjoy children and have a good rapport with them, then anyone can do it and I would encourage them to take the leap.”

“Travelling the country with FCA I have met many carers with that same sort of dedication and caring nature and I know there are more out there who can provide a loving and stable home for youngsters in desperate need of just that.”
