If ever there was a worthy cause…

Core Assets Fostering Last week my son came home from school with a letter and an empty collection box. The letter explained that each child in the class could offer to do helpful jobs and tasks around the house in exchange for money which was to be collected and handed in to school in aid of Comic Relief.

After talking about the kind of tasks he could do around the house (I had a nice long list!), we discussed what Comic Relief was and how it raises money through campaigns like Red Nose Day to help disadvantaged people both in the UK and across Africa.

Comic Relief was founded in 1985 by Richard Curtis and Lenny Henry in response to the famine in Ethiopia; it’s grown over the years and now gives money to a range of charities and deserving causes in the UK as well as Africa. Every year thousands of people do all kinds of things to raise money for those in need.

This year Red Nose Day is on Friday 15th March and there’s loads going on; sponsored ‘come-to-school-in-your-onesie’, ‘shave your head for money’, charity sky dives (for those brave enough) and of course there’s ‘bake-offs’ galore.

There’s always an amazing telethon, full of celebrities doing funny things for money (which is a lot of fun to watch) but the programme also focuses on the serious side of why the money’s needed, who it helps and how.

And throughout the campaign, we raise money and we donate money (as much as we can afford) so that positive and lasting change can happen for those who really need it.

We happily get involved in fundraising events like Red Nose Day for Comic Relief; at work, through school or independently – but for many of us this is usually as far as it goes.

So though this may be the one day of the year we show our support for those who need it, foster carers show they care every single day of the year; making a positive difference to the lives of children and young people who also need it.
