Fostering Success for Barnsley Couple

Archived: Posted March 27, 2013

Core Assets Fostering - Yorks & LincsMaxine, 54, is a foster carer from Barnsley. She’s made a difference to the lives of eight vulnerable young people in the last eight years. Here, Maxine shares her experience of fostering and the rewards it brings:

“If you had told my husband Derek, that we would be fostering young people with severe disabilities and complex needs full time ten years ago, he would have told you that you were mad. But in 2005 we joined Core Assets Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and since then we’ve worked as a team to offer stability to young people that truly need it.

“Derek worked as a locksmith but my career has always been in caring for others. When I left school I worked as nanny, then I supported adults with learning disabilities and soon after I was supporting vulnerable children. But I would always think to myself, ‘if only I could work more closely with these children, I could make such a difference,’ and that’s when I called Core Assets Fostering.

“Fostering impacts on your whole family but Core Assets Fostering ensure that your children are fully supported too. I think my children have really benefited from the experience, my youngest son Ben who’s 22 is a really caring and mature young man, he always looks out for the children we look after and does whatever he can to support Derek and I to make the child in placement feel welcome.

A challenging career

“For me, fostering is hugely rewarding and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. It can be challenging but the little rewards are what get you through the tougher days; like the look on a child’s face when they get a gold star at school, hearing them sing in the back of the car, or them giving you a hug before bedtime. We know from experience that the support you provide can really stay in the hearts of young people, we’re still in touch with many of the youngsters we’ve cared for, and more often than not they thank you for what you’ve taught them.

“Fostering with Core Assets is the best decision I’ve made, we’re fully supported by a therapist, education officer and social worker and there’s always someone at the end of the phone that can offer advice or guidance. The training is excellent too as Core Assets Fostering are passionate about investing in skills development.

“If you’re thinking about fostering, talk to other carers and do your research, you need to have lots of patience and a good sense of humour as well as being resilient and caring. Look into it, because you might surprise yourself like Derek did and really take to this rewarding role.”
