“Fostering Has Enriched My Life”

Archived: Posted May 14, 2013

Core Assets Fostering - North EastThere’s a current shortfall of over 9,000* foster carers across the UK, including around 450* in the North East. Here, foster carer Claire from Teesside describes the challenges and rewards of a caring career.

“I started working on the reception of a GP surgery because I’ve always loved helping others. But as I climbed the career ladder to management level, I found I had less and less interaction with people and realised how much I missed being ‘hands-on’ in my job. I wanted to be able to make a real difference in someone’s life, so looked into different care roles, but it was fostering that stood out for me.

“Just over two years ago I felt the time was right to call Core Assets Fostering, my husband Steven was fully supportive. My three children, who are now 14, nine and eight years old also backed my decision and have since played major roles in helping us provide vulnerable children with a safe and stable home.

“Fostering can be challenging, but the rewards outweigh any negatives. I feel privileged to be part of a young person’s life and to be able to see them flourish. Not only does providing a family environment make a difference to young people in care, but it has enriched my life and made my birth children more compassionate, tolerant and kind and brought us closer together as a family.”

“If you’re thinking about fostering then go for it. At Core Assets you get lots of fantastic training and support from professionals 24 hours a day. We’re not just a foster family we’re part of a bigger, Core Assets Fostering family and I’ve never looked back on my decision to foster.”
