Fostering and the Family in Northern Ireland

Archived: Posted March 27, 2013

Core Assets Fostering - NIGavin and Anthony are fifteen year old twin brothers from Northern Ireland. Their parents foster looked after children with Core Assets Fostering. We asked them a few questions about how it feels to be part of a fostering family and here’s what they said…

How do you get involved in the fostering process?

We’re involved right from the start. As a family we discuss the possibility of someone coming to stay with us, then we agree to meet them for a chat to get to know them a little. If the whole family’s in agreement, they come to stay and we help them get settled in.

What do you enjoy most about your family fostering?

We enjoy knowing that we’re helping someone in need and we enjoy getting to know new people.

Respite care’s good too, especially during school holidays. It’s nice to have young people of different ages stay with us, but if the child’s closer to our own age obviously we’ll have more in common with them.

What have you learned from being in a fostering household?

We’ve learned how to share our family and our home with the children we help foster. We now know that not everyone’s as lucky as we are to have a loving family and a place to call home.

Helping others makes us feel we’re doing something important and worthwhile.
