Foster carers win trip to Australia to fly the flag for fostering in the UK

Two foster carers from Shrivenham in Oxfordshire have won a once in a lifetime trip to Australia after entering a national story writing competition.

Jim and Dawn Humphries told the story of their experiences of being foster carers whilst with Foster Care Associates (FCA), resulting in the permanent reunification of one of their foster children with his birth family.

In November, Jim and Dawn will jet off to Sydney in Australia to represent FCA, and the UK, at the International Foster Care Organisation (IFCO) conference, where they will meet hundreds of foster carers from across the world to share stories of the challenges and rewards of caring for vulnerable young people in different cultures and countries.

Commenting, Jim said: “I’ve never written about my experiences of being a foster carer but once I got into it the words just flowed. The hardest part was keeping within the limit – a thousand words sounded like a lot, but once I got going it was nothing really. I could have written a book – in fact, maybe I still will!

“Dawn and I haven’t won anything since sports day at school so couldn’t believe it when I saw the email from FCA telling us that we’d won, it was all a bit overwhelming.  What a prize!”

Whilst their itinerary is pretty jam-packed with their attendance at the foster care conference, several days sightseeing and a week spent visiting family, the trip will also offer Jim and Dawn the opportunity for some relaxation.

David Oldham, CEO of FCA, said: “Jim and Dawn’s story really resonated with our judges, and demonstrated the positive outcomes that can be achieved for foster children when given the right support and guidance provided by their foster carers.  I’m proud that they will be representing Foster Care Associates at IFCO and flying the flag for the UK foster care sector.”

Summing up their time as foster carers Jim said: “Fostering is something Dawn and I wanted to do for years.  With so many vulnerable children and young people out there in need of real support, guidance and a safe, stable place to call home, if you’re able to help why wouldn’t you?”
