Foster carers in the South of England left spellbound after a day of celebrations

Archived: Posted October 23, 2015

At FCA in the South of England we celebrated International Foster Carer Appreciation Day and FCA’s 21st birthday at the luxury 5* Lainston House Hotel in a remote part of Winchester. We hadn’t told our foster carers what we had planned for them to mark the day, but it was clear by the early arrivals that the suspense of the day was too much and they couldn’t wait any longer!

The scenery that met our carers was truly breath-taking – a long winding two mile drive from the entrance to reach the hotel through beautiful grounds that surrounded the venue. We were blessed to have a beautiful autumn day which made the sight even more spectacular.

Foster carers in the South of England celebrate

It wasn’t long before the old converted Dawley Barn at the hotel was full of foster carers from across the South region. Steve Peverill, fostering service manager jumped centre stage to make a speech of appreciation to all of our foster carers. Steve is quite the comedian so he relished the opportunity to be able to share his gift and make everyone smile. We also had a birthday amongst our carers, so we all sang to her and made her feel slightly embarrassed at first, but was she dancing by the end of it. How lucky to share a birthday with FCA, it was clearly meant to be!

Shortly afterwards, Steve Charrett, an up close magician and mentalist, started walking around and asking carers to pick a card, think of a number and many other things to really challenge them. He really was one of the highlights of the day as everyone was left in amazement and confusion as to how he does it! But a magician never reveals his tricks!

Amongst the many canapes, drinks and coffee we also had a lovely lady come and introduce to our carers one of the birds of prey that she looks after, Eric a 12 year old falcon! Our foster carers were able to have a picture taken with him and hold him, and were surprised with the weight of what was seemingly a small bird. A real treat!

Music was played throughout but it was hard to hear over the laughter and talking from the carers, with some having not seen each other in a really long time.

The feedback about the day was great; here’s a snapshot of some of the comments our foster carers left in the guest book:

  •  “Feeling very pampered” – Terry and Mike
  • “Beautiful venue, relaxed, get away atmosphere, many thanks’ – Russell and Pricilla
  • “Very nice grounds and very good service” – Allan
  • “Beautiful venue, fab magician” – Gemma
  • “Thank you for spoiling us, have we got to wait a year for the next one?!” – John and Paula

We all can’t wait for next year!
