Foster care workers from North Wales complete trek for Foster Care Fortnight

A team of nine staff from Foster Care Associates (FCA) Cymru North, has successfully reached the top of Mount Snowdon, to raise awareness during Foster Care Fortnight.

The climb, which was completed on the 9th May, during Foster Care Fortnight, was to raise awareness of fostering and the need to recruit more carers in the UK. The team also set out to raise much-needed funds for the NSPCC charity, Childline, a UK based support charity for children under the age of 19.

The FCA Cymru North team set off at 9 am for their epic trek up the second highest mountain in the UK, which took them just over five hours to complete. Once at the top the team were greeted by blue skies, sunshine and picturesque views.

Continue to help raise awareness

Deborah Lamond, FCA Cymru North carer recruitment officer, who was also part of Foster Care Associates Snowdon trek team, said: “We set ourselves this challenge for Foster Care Fortnight to raise awareness and much-needed funds for a charity close to our hearts and were rewarded at the top of the summit with amazing views and a much-deserved glass of cold Snowdon Ale.

‘’From the fit and experienced to the first time climbers in the team, the determination and effort was truly impressive. This was a great team bonding experience and gave us the opportunity to reflect on the important work that we do. Foster care doesn’t just transform the lives of the young people who are fostered, it also has the power to positively change the lives of foster carers, their families and wider support network who are involved in fostering.

‘’I’d like to express a huge thank you to all of the team and those who have supported our efforts. So far we have exceeded our target of £250 but it’s not too late to donate, if anybody would like to contribute, we are still taking donations online at http://www.justgiving.com/FCA-Cymru-North.’’

This fundraising challenge completed by the FCA Cymru North team formed part of a wider new awareness campaign launched by independent foster care agency Foster Care Associates (FCA) ahead of Foster Care Fortnight (8-22 May 2017).

Foster with FCA

‘There’s a fostering crisis on your doorstep’, the new message from FCA, highlighted the fact that in 2016, 350 children and young people were referred to FCA from local authorities in the Cymru North, many in urgent need of a foster family.

Anne Armstrong, a regional manager at FCA Cymru North, said: “Many people would love to foster but they believe that their personal circumstances, or skills and experience, would prevent them from doing so.  Whether you’re single, over 50, childless or in a same sex relationship, fostering could be for you, so we’re encouraging people to make that initial enquiry. ‘’
