Finding New Ground…

Core Assets Fostering - Thames ValleyCore Assets Fostering - Thames ValleyGetting involved and experiencing new things is something we try to encourage when it comes to looked after children and young people. That’s why the Thames Valley community garden project is such a wonderful opportunity.

Team support worker Ben, from Core Assets Fostering in Thames Valley is helping to run the project. He told us about how children and young people in the Reading area have been getting green-fingered recently as part of this innovative project.

Thanks to a carer’s acquaintance, a plot of land became available to use in October last year and was cleared by young people, carers and social workers.

The garden will be used for things like storytelling, creative art, therapeutic sessions and one-to-one work and it’s a great way to get the young people outdoors and into the fresh air!

Ben says “The garden is coming along nicely; we’ve planted daffodils, forget-me-nots, various wild flowers, tulips and also some vegetables. The daffodils and tulips are flowering now and the others have just been planted but the ground is good so we’re very hopeful we’ll get a good return.

“Everything that’s been planted or built there has been done by our young people with only minimal guidance and supervision from adults, which is great to see.”

We’ll keep you posted on this project, including the planned ‘shed build’ event during May half term because you know what they say; from small beginnings come great things…
