Find out more about being a foster carer at the Late Summer Party in Central Park, Plymouth

Archived: Posted September 14, 2015

Some of our South Western team will be joining party-goers at Plymouth Central Park’s Late Summer Party on Sunday 20 September to advise people interested in fostering on how they could help dozens of children and young people in need of a foster home in the region.

We’re particularly appealing for carers who have the time, inclination and room to care for a young parent and their child. This type of fostering allows the parent to develop their parenting skills in a stable and caring environment, whilst under the guidance of a trained foster carer. The overall aim is to keep the family together and stop the child from going into care.

Young parent reading to childIt is estimated that in the South West alone, a total of 550 new foster families are needed in 2015, with 8,370 needed across the UK.

Sherree Cole, registered manager at our South West region, said: “This is one of a number of events we regularly hold to provide more information to people interested in taking the first step into providing foster care.

“In Plymouth we have an urgent need to find carers to look after young parents with their child. Rather than referring struggling young parents to residential units to have their parenting assessed, local authorities are increasingly referring them to us. A foster home can play a pivotal role in ensuring the parent and child a happy life together, and equip them with the extra parental support they may need.

“With fully trained support staff across the region ready to work with new carers, FCA offer full support and guidance to carers and children alike to ensure that each relationship fulfils the children and the family as whole”

Placements can range from short-term assessment periods, which generally last up to 12 weeks, to more long-term ones that offer the chance to help the parent provide care and guidance to the child. Some are pre-birth placements that help parents to prepare for the birth of the child.

Join the FCA team at the Late Summer Party between 10am and 4pm. Or find out more about foster care in Plymouth and the South West.
