FCA raises £1,000 for charity set-up by Gloucester foster carer

A charity set up by one of our incredible foster carers, Delroy Ellis, has received a cheque for £1,000 from our executive chairman and co-founder, Jim Cockburn, as a result of our fundraising activities over the last few months.

In 2008, Foster Care Associates foster carer Delroy from Gloucester established the charity Increase the Peace, followed by the Youth Peace project in 2011. The two charities provide youth club services for young people aged eight to 21, focussed on positive activities such as music, dance, arts and crafts, cooking and sports in a safe and nurturing environment.

Foster Care Associates presents a cheque to Gloucester foster carer Delory Ellis' charity, Increase the Peace.

Severely dyslexic and with a father who was a drug user and mother that suffered domestic violence, Delroy was selling drugs aged 14 and in and out of the criminal justice system until the age of 21, but a visit to his father shortly before he died inspired him to turn his life around.

Delroy is now a full-time foster carer, and is determined to help children and young people, not just by providing a welcoming home to those he looks after, but also, by campaigning to improve the lives and life chances of young people in his hometown of Gloucester.

Jim Cockburn said: “Delroy is a testament to the tenacity, passion and dedication of our foster carers and the extremes they go to turn the lives of those in their care around. Increase the Peace plays an important role in transforming the lives of young people in his hometown of Gloucester. We’re proud to be able to present this cheque to the charity thanks to the fundraising activities of our staff which included dress down days, cake bakes and quizzes.”

Delroy said: “My father always told me to be a leader not a follower and that really had a big impact on me. Since then I’ve devoted my life to making sure that young people don’t make the mistakes I made as teenager. Being vigilant to a young person’s needs and spotting their strengths is key to my work both as a foster carer and charity worker.”
