Northern Ireland Celebrate 10th Anniversary

NI conference 3The Commissioner for Children and Young People Patricia Lewsley-Mooney was among nearly 100 guests who celebrated the 10th anniversary of FCA Northern Ireland recently.

Our Northern Ireland team have been providing fostering services across the country for the last decade. To mark the milestone, staff, carers and FCA founders Jim Cockburn and Jan Rees, gathered at Malone House in Belfast for a special conference to celebrate the achievements and positive outcomes that have been realised in those 10 years.

The theme of the conference was ‘resilience’ and Professor Robbie Gilligan, co-founder of the Children’s Research Centre at Trinity College, Dublin, gave a fascinating keynote speech on the topic.

During the day there were also workshops and a powerful presentation by care leavers about their experiences and how they had to develop their resilience through their time in care.

One of the most memorable moments of the conference was a beautifully moving performance by a looked after young person who sang two solo songs, provoking a standing ovation from the audience.

A prize presentation was also held in recognition of the achievements of the young people, with Commissioner Lewsley presenting the certificates and awards, before delivering a well-received closing speech.

Feargal O’Keefe, regional manager for Core Assets Northern Ireland, said the conference had been a ‘major success’.

He said: “We are very proud to celebrate our 10th year in Northern Ireland and of the successes we have achieved in that time and today’s conference was full of moving and inspiring moments from our looked after young people and care leavers that reminded us all why we do what we do.

“We are extremely grateful to Professor Gilligan for being our keynote speaker and to the Children’s Commissioner for joining us on this special occasion.

“Sustaining 10 years as a major provider of quality children’s services demonstrates our track record for success and the important role we play in making a positive and lasting difference for children and families living in Northern Ireland.”
