Family Fun in the South West

Archived: Posted January 19, 2015

Our South Western team love getting together to have a good time. In fact, there’s always something fun going on for our foster carers, their families, and the children and young people they care for.

So when we had a look back at our highlights from 2014, it was no surprise that we had dozens of activities and events to choose from.

In the summer holidays, carers and young people from across Torbay braved the chilly water to enjoy a day of rock pooling and sandcastle building at Broadsands. The event was particularly special for fourteen-year-old A, whose progressive muscular condition had previously prevented him from fulfilling his dream of visiting a real beach. Thanks to his amazing foster carers, who saved up to buy him an all-terrain motorised wheelchair, A was able to explore the seaside for the first time.

“Everyone could see the sheer joy and excitement on A’s face and we sat watching him do doughnuts in the sand, before disappearing down the beach with his foster carers to race along the tide and splash through the waves,” said Steph, our Education Liason Officer.

A few days later, the group met again for a day trip on the Dartmouth Steam Railway, followed by a river boat ride and journey on an open top vintage double decker bus. Steph said “Some of our young people had never been on a train at all, let alone a steam train. Everyone had a great day.”

Scadson Woods was the setting of our annual Teddy Bears Picnic, which saw carers and children across the region brave a few showers (and a bit of sunshine!) for a delicious picnic and some fun outdoors activities. The children teamed up to make dens, build dams in the river and have a go on a rope swing.

One of the most popular events in our calendar is our Forest School Day, which gives children and young people the opportunity to explore and learn all about the great outdoors. On our last trip, they discovered edible plants, identified feathers from different types of birds and learnt how sap from pine trees can be used as glue. The day was a huge success and ended with cooking hotdogs and toasting marshmallows on a log fire.

This year promises to be just as exciting with plenty of activities planned across the South West region. We’ll see you there!
