Double Award Success for FCA North East

Ira&AndyCollinsAt FCA North East, we love any chance to celebrate the achievements of our foster carers and looked after children.

That’s why we were thrilled when one of our fostering couples and the child in their care scooped not only one, but two accolades at the recent Cumbria Children in Care Council Awards.

Foster Care Associates (FCA) foster carers Ira and Andy Collins were presented with the prestigious title of Foster Carer of the Year in recognition of their endless commitment to two-year-old A, who was also named Inspirational Child of the Year for the region.

The couple from Newcastle were commended for the extensive health training they’ve undertaken to help them care for A, who has severe medical problems that mean he has already had to face two lots of major heart surgery in his short life.

“I’m immensely proud of Ira and Andy,” said Jodie Fletcher-Murray, Operations Manager for FCA North East. “They have a zest for life and are always positive and focused to ensure their foster child has the best opportunities available to him, despite his difficulties. They’ve been phenomenally committed through some tough times.”

Over 100 children, young people, foster carers, county councillors and staff attended the awards ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of children in care and the people who support them. Councillor Anne Burns, cabinet member for Children’s Services who presented the awards, said: “It was a fantastic day and a real success. It really brought home the value of the work we do with children in care, and the difference that we can make to their chances in life.”

The annual event is organised by the Cumbria Children in Care Council forum, which gives children in care from across Cumbria the chance to discuss issues and help shape the services they receive from the council.
