Dog’s Breakfast

Foster Care AssociatesAre you waiting to go to fostering panel? I know that feeling. It was almost 18 months ago now, when we had ours. The day we received the letter through the post with the date on was an exciting time for all of us, including our crazy dog, Poppy…

“Friday 28th October 2011

Letter came this morning about panel. The second it slid through the letter box and landed on the door mat, guess who made an appearance? I don’t know what it is about dogs and post, but ours makes it her personal mission every morning to ‘collect’ each letter and rip it to pieces. Meet Poppy – our own personal shredder.

In her head, I’m sure she sees it as an urgent, vitally important task that cements her status as a valued member of the family. In reality, she’s slobbering all over our post and tearing it into mulch. And I have to follow her around and rescue it from her jaws. Nip over to my house at about 8.30am on any weekday morning and you’ll find me sitting at the kitchen table – magnifying glass in hand, deerstalker perched on my noggin – holding torn pieces of paper up to the sunlight and desperately playing detective. Just call me Sherlock.

Most days I don’t mind – if it’s junk mail I’m positively elated. But today, as I rooted through my morning confetti, my eye caught sight of a bright and colourful logo. The Core Assets logo. A letter about fostering.

I relayed recent events in my mind and tried to figure out what it could be about. Fostering panel, it had to be. Our Form F was complete, we had been on Skills to Foster training. It was only last week that our assessing social worker had called – what had she said again? “It’ll be mid-November time probably, expect a letter in the next few weeks.”

That’d be it then. Somewhere, amidst a dental reminder and an advert for sofa sales, lies one of the most important dates in my life – torn to pieces and covered in slobber. A day we’ve been planning and anticipating for weeks, months and years. Yep, my moment of truth has been torn to pieces by an over-enthusiastic dog.

It would have taken hours to piece together each shard of paper. Now, I love a good jigsaw as much as the next person, but I haven’t got the time for that. One quick call to my local office and I had the date I needed; Thursday 17th November. Perfect.

I marked it firmly on our calendar in big, bold writing. That night we celebrated with a Chinese takeaway and sat around as a family chatting about what the future could hold.

The humans amongst us that is. Poppy’s in the doghouse.
