Derby Foster Carer Receives Long Service Award

Archived: Posted June 13, 2013

Local foster carer, Dawn, 45, has received recognition for her 10 years-long dedication to supporting vulnerable children and young people at a celebratory event hosted by Core Assets Fostering in May.

Dawn, from Derby, is used to a house full of children. Her mother and step father have fostered for years and Dawn began her fostering career by providing respite for her mum.

“I used to work in a school but I always knew I would foster full time eventually,” explained Dawn.

“My partner, Steve, is hugely supportive and I think fostering has helped bring my birth son, Kyle, out of his shell. He’s non-judgemental and very caring. I think his experiences of fostering have helped him be the brilliant Dad that he is today, and I hope that he and his partner will consider fostering in the future too.”

“The rewards of fostering are huge. It doesn’t matter whether you care for children on a short term or long term basis, you’ll see a positive difference in that young person.”

Core Assets Fostering - MidlandsDawn continued: “To anyone thinking about fostering I’d urge you to go for it. Too many people are quick to put up barriers or make up excuses, but it’s important to focus on what you can do and then jump in with both feet. At Core Assets you’re supported by professionals around the clock, the training keeps you up to date with techniques and other carers are more than happy to provide guidance, so you’re never alone.”

“Fostering is my career for life now. I’ve never looked back on my decision and I learn something new every day.”

Peter Battram, area manager for Core Assets Fostering in the Midlands, presented the awards and commented on Dawn’s achievement: “Dawn is a fantastic carer who has shown commitment, compassion and courage in the last decade. Her patience and positive attitude has helped young people to succeed and live happy, secure lives in her care.”

The long service awards were presented as part of Core Assets Fostering’s Foster Care FortnightTM celebrations. The campaign, which runs from May 13 to May 26, is a national initiative looking to raise the profile of fostering and highlight the need to recruit more carers.
