Could you find room to foster?

Archived: Posted July 23, 2015

We’ve launched a new recruitment campaign to address the shortage of foster carers in the UK.

Called ‘Finding Room to Foster’, the campaign draws on the moments when our foster carers reached that unique time in their life to make the important decision to foster a child – and made room both emotionally and physically in their homes.

Care is... finding room to foster

For many of us, a spare room is simply a place to put things. Piles of laundry waiting to be ironed or folded away. Old books and forgotten CD collections. But to a young person in need of foster care, your spare room is a place where they can think, talk and feel safe.

Dave Churchyard from Aylesbury found room to foster when he retired from the RAF. He became a foster carer through one of our programmes which places the children of serving personnel with other military families during short-term deployments.

Dave said: “My wife is still serving and her teenage son still lives with us in our family quarters, but both my own sons are now living away at university. With all the spare room at home and the prospect of having lots of spare time on my hands, it suddenly became clear to me that fostering was the ‘something new’ I’d been looking for to fill it.”
