Clowning Around and Going Wild in the South West

Core Assets Fostering - SWA letter from the South West team…

Half term week started with a splash – literally! A brave few made it to Ham Hill in Somerset but rain stopped play. All agreed it was a brilliant place so we’ll be back there in the summer. We had all sorts of games lined up including good old fashioned sack races with proper hessian sacks donated by Owen’s Coffee.

On Wednesday the sun shone and a veritable convention descended on Paignton Zoo for a day on the wild side. Over a hundred people attended and had a great day. Paignton Zoo is a leading centre for conservation and as well as the thrill of meeting the huge range of animals and birds, the zoo is dotted with interactive facts and information too.

Thursday brought more sunshine and our first venture into the Wild Wanderers Forest School. Quickly lost in the woods of the rolling Devon landscape, our young people had fun, fun and then some more fun! They got muddy, collected their own clay and made little items, hugged a tree and left a buttercup for the tree fairy, collected firewood and then sealed the facial layer of mud that had collected with a topping of stickiness from marshmallows toasted on the open fire.

The young people were also shown how to build a fire safely and even got to eat some of the natural vegetation growing around the site – all under the careful supervision of the Forest School Leader, Phillipa. One carer texted afterward saying: “Thank you for an absolutely amazing day. It was awesome – very muddy, but for kids who’ve never got mucky before, it was pure heaven”!

During this week we were also able to obtain concessionary tickets for Circus Starr. This is a not for profit community circus where any proceeds are donated to the Children’s Hospice. The concessionary tickets are sponsored by a range of companies to whom we’re very grateful. We were allocated 40 tickets for each of the performances at Paignton, Plymouth and Exeter.

The feedback was excellent. Many of the young people who attended had not been to a circus before and the fun included clowns, acrobats, trapeze artists and balancing acts.

All in all, a wonderful and busy week of fun and exciting things to do.
