Catch of the Day

The picturesque South Linden was the perfect place to cast off last week as the North East men’s group descended on the lake for a fishing trip.

Pol, a foster carer from Newcastle, managed to hook one of the biggest catches of the day. He says “I had a great time. It was a good opportunity to meet and chat to other carers and staff. I also had the chance to switch off for a few hours and recharge my batteries.”

The fishing trip is just one of many activities organised by men’s group, which not only gives male carers the chance to take a few hours out to relax, but also gives them the opportunity to spend more quality time with their looked after children and young people.

Lee, a support worker from the Durham office, helps to run the group. He says “The men really appreciate the group, as it gives them time to share their fostering experiences. It also enables them to teach young people new skills and help them to engage in activities. If there is anything a young person can’t do, we’ll show them how. There’s no pressure on anybody, so if anybody just wants to come along and relax for a few hours then that’s fine with us.”

So, what’s next on their calendar? “Either a BBQ or another fishing trip”, smiles Lee. “We’re also going out for a meal and to a comedy club soon too. We organise events throughout the year and welcome new members from the North East with open arms. Our days out are often set in relaxing or peaceful environments – and we have great fun!”
