Caring Avril Has Never Looked Back

Avril Jensen 2A foster carer from Port Talbot says she has ‘loved every minute’ after being recognised for her fantastic service as a foster carer.

Avril Jensen has been a carer with FCA for 15 years, taking on the challenge after the tragedy of her husband passing away.

She hasn’t looked back since and has looked after so many young people, both in placement and as a respite carer, that she struggles to put a number on exactly how many children she has welcomed into her home over the years.

The 66-year-old speaks with great fondness about her time with FCA and explained why she decided to take the leap and become a foster carer in the first place.

She said: “It has been 15 years of doing something I love and I look back on it with huge affection. It has been nice to watch the company grow and see different things developing. Once I decided to foster with FCA I never looked back.

“I decided to foster through my daughter really. When she was at school she had a friend who was in care and my daughter wanted us to foster because of that and we decided to do it as a family.

“I’ve always been involved with children – even when I was growing up it was just something I always wanted to do. I love helping people and I’m the same in my community as well.”

Avril, who has two grown-up children of her own, admitted there have been challenges to overcome but the rewards of helping a vulnerable young person on to the right track have been ‘immeasurable’.

She said: “It has been an incredibly rewarding 15 years and despite the challenges I have loved every minute. I’m still in touch with many of the young people I have looked after.

“A few live near me and I see them out with their own children – it’s fantastic to see them getting on with their lives.”

FCA is currently looking to tackle a shortfall of 10,000 foster carers in the UK through its UK10K campaign, and Avril encouraged people to think seriously about taking on the role with FCA.

She added: “I cannot fault the support I have had from FCA one bit. They are wonderful with the young people and really go the extra mile.

“I would definitely encourage people to think about fostering as a career. As long as you are caring and nurturing and have plenty of patience you can do it.”

FCA Cymru South area manager Vic Thomas paid tribute to Avril and encouraged more people to follow her lead and become foster carers.

He said: “Avril is a wonderfully committed and compassionate foster carer. She is so dedicated to the role and an inspiration to us all.”
